The KYOCERA Document Solutions Group is making a Group-wide effort to strengthen fire and disaster prevention management. At each business site, various activities to raise employee awareness of disaster prevention, such as fire and disaster drills and in-house firefighting training, are conducted under the leadership of its own internal disaster management organization.
Our 2011 plan is to improve our response capability regarding earthquake disasters. We plan to stockpile equipment and supplies for disasters as well as strengthening in-house firefighting units to minimize damage and ensure efficient disaster response and recovery.

With the cooperation of a competent fire station, the Headquarters conducted a comprehensive fire and disaster drill. The drill was based on the assumption that a fire had broken out following a 6.0-plus magnitude earthquake. In the drill, employees practiced the necessary actions to take at the time of such a disaster, including what to do for protection during an earthquake, reporting the situation, calling the fire station to report a fire, initial firefighting, and evacuation procedures.
Hands-on training such as "rescue training in the smoke," "first-aid training," and "earthquake experience using an earthquake simulator" was also carried out by the in-house firefighting team.

In fiscal 2010, in addition to regular evacuation fire drills, the Shilong Plant held a night-time evacuation drill for night-shift workers. If an accident occurs at night, unlike during the daytime, even merely evacuating the building involves some risk. This drill was very helpful for night-shift workers.
The night-shift workplaces were divided into three blocks, for each of which a night-time evacuation drill was carried out separately on March 5, 10 and 29, 2010, respectively. If a fire occurs at night, all the lights go out except for the emergency lights. In such a situation, it is expected that workers will not be able to think and act calmly even in a familiar room. To train night-shift workers in evacuating in a dark environment, night-time evacuation drills were organized.

In the drill, immediately after the fire alarm was sounded, all the normal lights were turned off and the emergency lights were turned on. Under the direction of the designated area leaders, all the workers evacuated the building in an orderly manner. Although it was the first time for the KYOCERA Document Solutions Group to conduct a night-time evacuation drill, all three drills ran very smoothly thanks to good coordination with the participating and other relevant departments.

On April 9, 2011, the 2011 Fire Drill was held at the Shilong Plant, with 343 employees taking part. The purpose of this drill was to train employees in proper usage of fire extinguishers and hydrants. After the lecture, participants received hands-on training on how to operate a fire extinguisher and a fire hydrant. Participants practiced operating a fire extinguisher to put out flames. They also practiced connecting and disconnecting a hose to the hydrant and spraying water on the fire.

On December 2, 2010, a comprehensive fire and disaster drill was held at the Hirakata Plant, with 176 employees taking part. This drill, which focused on how to effectively respond to an earthquake, was conducted with nine members from Hirakata Higashi Fire Department. In the drill, under the supervision of the Fire Department staff, the in-house firefighting headquarters and firefighting teams in charge of specific zones practiced the specified emergency actions and procedures, including issuance of directions from the headquarters to each zone's firefighting team.
At the end of the drill, the Director of the Hirakata Higashi Fire Department gave us valuable advice, saying, "You should devise a method to enable anyone to understand the situation at a glance. It is also important to plan response procedures under different weather conditions.
