Activities for protecting ecosystems

After the 10th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP10) held in October 2010, people's interest in the conservation of biodiversity and sustainable use thereof has soared. Being aware of the significance of biodiversity, KYOCERA Document Solutions Group has been implementing various supporting activities. Here are some examples.

Biodiversity Project in Shiga

On April 14, 2011, four employees of KYOCERA Document Solutions participated in a biodiversity conservation project carried out at the Shushi Pond on the company premises in Imazu-cho, Shiga Prefecture. It is a common view today that companies are responsible for making contributions to the conservation of biodiversity, in light of the recent degradation of natural woodlands caused by corporate development activities of neighbor towns and global warming which severely affect ecosystems. The Shushi Pond was created in the Meiji Era and still serves as a habitat for diverse fauna including crucian carps, medaka fish and water bugs. The name of the pond, "shushi," means "locust." To protect this valuable natural environment on our own premises, our employees have decided to carry out this project in cooperation with members of a local civic organization. The participants, who discovered in the pond precious organisms designated as endangered species, such as tree frogs and medaka fish, have learned the vital role of nature and the importance of protecting it. We also learned that local citizens desire to continue such collaborative activities with us, which has further inspired us with new depths of emotion for our commitment to environmental activities to protect ecosystems.

In June 2010, sixty employees of KYOCERA Document Solutions Thailand participated in the mangroves planting project carried out at the Si Nakhon Khuean Khan Park in Samut Prakan, located in the outskirts of Bangkok.

Following the acquisition of the ISO14001 certification in August 2006, KYOCERA Document Solutions Thailand launched a volunteer program called the "Big Cleaning Day" as part of its contributions to local communities, and has carried out five cleaning activities since then. Subsequently, with a desire to do something to stop global warming, the organization launched another volunteer program in 2008 to plant mangroves.

In FY2010, a second planting activity took place at the same place as on the previous occasion, with more than 150 mangroves being planted. It is hoped that these activities will help prevent global warming in some way.
