A research programme by Economist Impact, sponsored by Kyocera Document Solutions, assessing the green-skills ecosystem in six cities has been launched today.

Kyocera Document Solutions Inc. (President: Hironori Ando, hereinafter: Kyocera) is pleased to announce the launch of a new global report, A Green Edge by Economist Impact, sponsored by Kyocera Document Solutions. This research programme explores the drivers behind green-skills adoption as well as analyzes businesses’ readiness and efforts to adopt green skills*1.

Climate action in cities is essential to achieving ambitious net zero emissions goals, but success will depend on the capabilities and skills of the workforce, who must equip themselves to remain relevant. Kyocera has been paying attention to the necessity even before sustainability attracted global attention, and working for more than 30 years to develop environmentally friendly products with long-life designs that minimize the need for parts replacement. With the findings from this research programme showing what the green skills are and what actions are required for the companies, we are contributing to achieve the sustainable society for the future.

Based on an extensive literature review, expert interviews, and a global survey of 300 executives across six cities—Berlin, London, New York, Singapore, Sydney, and Tokyo—that captures the perception of the green-skills, A Green Edge report and barometer studied the green skills environment in an urban context based on three pillars: environmental awareness, leadership, and employee imperative.

  • Results from a new Economist Impact survey show that just a fraction (2.7%) of senior executives located in the world’s biggest business hubs – Berlin, London, New York, Singapore, Sydney, and Tokyo – believe their organizations have sufficient levels of green skills.
  • Yet nearly all (95.7%) of those surveyed expect green skills to become the most important skill workforces possess in the next five years.
  • Research shows the worldwide shortage of workers needed for the green transition will rise to seven million workers by 2030 if this deficiency is not addressed, complicating the route to achieving corporate sustainability goals.*2
