Environmental Preservation Efforts and Results

Based on the ECOSYS concept, the Shilong Plant adheres to green production. We also revise environmental targets every year for the sake of improvement, according to the policy set forth by the General Manager.

Actions and Results in FY2018

Since FY2018 and according to the global integration of the Environmental Management System, we set environmental targets, including the reductions of energy consumption, CO2 emissions and water consumption (per total production) by 1.1%, compared to those of the previous year and the reduction of waste emissions (per total production) by 1.5%, compared to that of the previous year. As for the results of the targets, we could not achieve energy consumption, CO2 emissions and water consumption because of the effect of the construction of a new plant, but our efforts did improve the basic unit of waste emissions by the efficient use and reduction of resources.

Efforts to Reduce Energy Consumption

Since FY2008, we have continuously strived to reduce electricity consumption. As a result of these efforts, electricity consumption decreased from 45,110 thousand kWh in FY2008 to 30,150 thousand kWh in FY2017, and the basic unit fell 44.6% in FY2017 from FY2008. And, according to the global integration of Environmental Management System since FY2018, we have worked on the reduction of the basic unit of energy consumption as a new target. For the achievement of the target, by encouraging the introduction of energy-saving technologies such as a switch to highly efficient motors and by utilizing energy management system, we will continue to monitor the status of our energy consumption in order to use energy more efficiently in line with the Chinese government's policy.

Air-conditioning equipment, which is the primary electrical equipment in the plant, consumes a lot of electricity. An energy-saving manager is assigned to all air-conditioning equipment in the plant so that equipment operation is efficiently managed. Also, since 2017, we have promoted the shift of lifting pumps for air-conditioning to the inverter type. In FY2018, 28 units have been replaced.
The energy management system is utilized primarily in areas of the plant where a lot of energy is consumed. This enables "visualization" of energy usage conditions with monitors.
For example, by monitoring electricity consumption at night (12 am to 7 am) during which time there is no production, we can reduce the monthly peak electricity consumption from 11,480 kWh in 2015 (when the system had not yet been installed) to 8,816 kWh in the same month in 2017. This amounts to a 23.2% reduction.
This system was given the recognition of the A rank by the Dongguan City authority.

Target for FY2019

Environmental targets for FY2019 are the improvement of greenhouse gas emissions and energy consumption (per added value) by more than 3%, water consumption (per total production) by more than 1% and industrial waste emissions (per total production) by more than 1.5%, compared to those of the previous year. In addition to the elimination of inefficiencies, we plan to promote a remodeling of the air-conditioning systems, shift to inverter type compressors and introduce reused energy.

Efforts to Reduce Waste Emissions

Until FY2017, we worked on achieving a waste recycling rate of 99.6%, or more, as an environmental target. But, according to the global integration of the Environmental Management System, in FY2018, we worked on the reduction of the basic unit of industrial waste emissions as a new target and promoted several efforts.
As a part of these efforts, we have placed personnel in charge of collecting hazardous waste and set up a one-on-one checking system. For example, oil-immersed waste cloths are checked when they are collected prior to disposal, and if they are disposed of in a wasteful manner, the responsible personnel takes a picture and sends it to the department for feedback. In addition, case examples of unnecessary disposal are announced at the monthly Environmental Management Committee meeting for the purpose of sharing the information to all departments. For example, a lot of residue, such as waste grease, remained in some of the discarded chemical containers. This was because the opening of the container is so small that it is impossible to completely remove the residue inside the container. To solve this problem, we developed a tool to reduce the residual chemical content, which also leads to reduction in the generation of such waste.
As a result of these efforts, we achieved approximately a 19% reduction of the basic unit of industrial waste emissions against its target, the reduction of industrial waste emissions (per total production) by 1.5% compared to that of the previous year. Also, in FY2019, we will install scales so that the weight of waste emitted from each division can be identified accurately and will raise employee's awareness of sorting and reduction of waste. We intend to completely check the properties of wastes, identify the source causes that create waste, and promote measures to reduce waste.

Reuse of Waste

In December of 2008, we established a waste reuse system for the purpose of promoting the reuse of resources, in order to reduce waste emissions and make effective use of resources. In this system, we choose the items which may have the value of reuse from the ones submitted from departments as waste and call on employees to reuse them by putting their photos and specifications on the in-house database. In FY2018, 6,199 items, including 5,180 plastic bags, 13 chairs, 4 shelves, 20 desks and 95 toner boxes, have been reused.

Promotion of Green Purchasing

Green purchasing has been actively promoted, in order to reduce waste. As an example, cardboard container boxes, which had been formerly used for parts delivery, have been replaced with plastic containers, which are sturdy and returnable.

Efforts to Reduce Water Consumption

The water consumption basic unit target for FY2018 was a 1.1% reduction. Reducing water consumption and discharge of drainage have been promoted by installing taps with a water-saving function, as well as by encouraging employees to save water. In FY2019, by establishing a drainage treatment facility, the reuse of industrial wastewater for manufacturing equipment, such as air-conditioners and boilers, has been achieved.

We have one in-house industrial wastewater treatment facility and two in-house domestic wastewater treatment facilities. The quality of treated water is measured, weekly, by staff and, regularly, by an outside organization. We are in compliance with the standards for wastewater of Dongguan city, wherein the plant is located, and have passed all unannounced inspections of the municipal government.
